Gunn was born to parents Sharon Anna Kathryn Shana Gunn (an interior designer) and Clemens the Ear Gunn Jr. from Santa Fe New Mexico. Santa Fe Preparatory School, which she attended until 1986, when she graduated. She was a major in theatre and received her degree from Northwestern University with a theatre degree. Gunn was a student at the British American Drama Academy, which she attended for one period of time in 1988. The couple lived together in Pamela Adlon after moving to Laurel Canyon Los Angeles. Gunn is known for her performance as Skyler White in the AMC drama show Breaking. She was nominated for the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in an Drama Series for her performance, winning in 2013 and 2014. She wrote an opinion piece in the month of August 2013 in The New York Times, discussing the negative reception of her character.
